Slate green marks the medallion, the spandrels and the flowers of this charming cream rug. Slate green and brown tendrils, palmettes and a few pale blue touches fill the cream field. A round, lobed medallion in slate green holds a pale blue core, with a slender pendant above and below. Splendid slate green spandrels curve into the four corners. The main border runs gray beige, with lovely slate green and brown flowers along a winding vine. Narrow tan and brown stripes run beside the border. The colors read soft, as if lightly washed, and the drawing stays clear. It anchors a sitting area, letting the slate green notes settle against the pale ground. At 9'3" by 12'9", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Their animal designs match those in royal manuscripts and book bindings, all of them born in the Safavid court design workshop. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Saturated madder reds are what old Kashans are known for. This rug works in a quieter range, slate green, brown and pale blue on cream.

Full care guideReturns

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
