About this rug

A round, scalloped medallion with a tall lamp-shaped pendant above and below gives this rug a charming look. The ivory field carries graceful curling vines and small blossoms in olive, gray brown and pale blue. A round, scalloped medallion has a core of pale green and pale blue, ringed in gray brown and peach, with a tall lamp-shaped pendant above and below. Splendid pale blue spandrels with scrolling palmettes occupy each corner. The main border has a pale ivory ground, carrying gray brown vines with powder blue and pale green palmettes. Narrow guard stripes in gray brown, pale blue and ivory frame the border on either side. The pile is full across the rug, and a light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Cool blue notes keep the wide ivory ground from looking stark. At 8'1" by 12'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

Nothing is known of Kashan carpets from the 1600s through the 1800s; then, at the dawn of the 20th century, a large commercial production arose there. UNESCO lists the carpet weaving of Kashan as living heritage, noting that almost one in three residents works in carpet making and that most of the makers are women. The formal Persian rug is most closely tied to the central Persian city of Kashan: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Kashan rugs were made to be the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece keeps its central medallion and a spandrel in each corner, with curling vines running across the field. Two lamp-shaped pendants point to the top and bottom edges of the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
