About this rug

Slate blue and cream make this Kashan a lovely rug. Washed down to a tone-on-tone palette, this Kashan is all slate blue and cream. The field carries an all-over design of scrolling vines, rosettes and palmettes worked in cream and soft beige, with no medallion to break the rhythm. Rows of pale medallions on powder blue fill the border bands. Nothing on the surface raises its voice, and that restraint is the whole appeal. It brings age and softness into a room without adding visual noise. At 10' by 13'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashan rugs

In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Usually it is worked in deep red with navy in the border. This one takes the other Kashan road. It is the all-over type, the pattern repeating across the whole field with no medallion, and the colors have been washed to blue and cream rather than red. The drawing still carries the workshop discipline the city is known for, smooth curves and a repeat that holds its spacing from edge to edge. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the care in the drawing shows it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
