About this rug

The herati repeat on the dark blue field is charming. A dark blue field holds a herati repeat, the fish-and-leaf lattice that signals abundance, with rosettes and curved leaves in brown, red and cream. At the center, a beautiful cream diamond medallion steps inward to a dark blue hexagon at the core. Slate blue triangles fill the corners. Around them runs a wide main border in a mid blue, with lovely red paisley leaves, brown blossoms and pointed cartouches between cream guard stripes dotted in brown. The dark field is worn low in places, which gives it a soft, smoky depth, while the red in the border stays bright. It grounds a room the way a dark wood floor does, and the cream diamond gives the eye somewhere to rest. At 8'10" by 12'8", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. The main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia is Birjand, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Expect a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion on a palette of madder, ivory and deep blue. This rug joins both plans, with a centered medallion over a herati lattice, in deep blue, cream and madder red. What departs is the medallion, which steps out in straight edges instead of curves. The knotting is dense enough that each rosette and leaf stays legible at small scale.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
