About this rug

This dark blue rug is wonderful for its red lobed medallion, pointed at top and bottom. The field is dark blue, closely packed with the herati pattern, whose fish and leaf shapes mark abundance, in gold, cream and red. A splendid red lobed medallion, pointed at top and bottom, holds a teal core ringed in cream. Cream stepped spandrels fill the corners, carrying the same lattice in teal and gold. The beautiful red main border winds vines through teal cartouches, flower heads and leaves. A gold band of red cartouches runs inside it, and narrow pale stripes edge the border. The pile is full across the whole rug, without a bare spot. It suits a room that wants deep color: the red border warms the dark field, and the cream corners lift it. At 7'7" by 10'11", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Medallion carpet designs of the 16th century are usually associated with Tabriz, then the Safavid capital and the seat of the royal design workshops. A special court workshop, possibly at Tabriz, is credited with translating the most splendid book illuminations into carpets. In northwestern Persia, Tabriz grew as a city workshop tradition, and that is where the finely knotted weave and the strict order of the pattern come from. Here the medallion is dead center, and the border lines up at each corner. Tabriz workshops also drew on a wider range of color than most, placing ivory, gray beige and pale blue grounds beside the reds. On this rug the reds meet a dark blue field, and the cream is held back for the corner pieces.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
