A large cream medallion spreads across the center of this charming navy rug. Set within a navy field, a large cream medallion spreads its lobed shape across the center, filled with fine vines and flower heads in rose, steel blue and olive. A small steel blue rosette forms its core, and broad blue and rose pendants run out toward the top and bottom of the field. Small sprays of flowers sit against the navy at the middle of each long side. The main border is navy, with a graceful scroll of red, blue and cream leaves, flanked by guard stripes of small boteh on cream and a camel scroll. Pile runs low in spots across the navy field. It anchors a sitting area, letting the cream center glow against the navy around it. At 7'1" by 9'10", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Marco Polo, by Walter Hawley’s account of 1913, wrote of the beautiful shawls and carpets made by the women of Kerman. The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This rug keeps open navy ground around a curvilinear medallion, with vines and blossoms spreading across it. Rose and steel blue notes lift out of the cream drawing.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
