About this rug

Pale blue runs through the leaves of this charming rug. Vines, palmettes and flower heads in tan, cream and rust fill the navy field, with pale blue running through the leaves. A beautiful lobed cream medallion with a rust ring and a pale blue core sits at the center, framed by a scalloped oval edged in rust. The gorgeous main border is cream, set with large flower heads and curling leaves in navy and rust, with small blue leaves between. Narrow guard stripes in slate blue and cream flank it, each carrying a small leaf scroll. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the field, where the foundation shows. It anchors a sitting area, the cream border keeping the navy center from feeling heavy. At 6'5" by 9'9", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Near Isfahan, Nain sits on the edge of the central desert. Unlike most Persian weaving towns, Nain built its reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier. Its palette is unusually pale for Persia: ivory grounds with soft blue, and closely worked vines. This rug carries the soft blue in its leaf scrolls and guard stripes. Here the field is navy, with cream kept for the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
