About this rug

On this navy rug, lovely vases of flower sprays and domed bowls stand in rows down the field. A navy field is packed with leafy vines, gold flowers and palmettes, with vases of flower sprays and domed bowls set in rows down the field. A splendid pointed oval medallion in cream and gold, with a rust red core, is ringed by teal leaves. Handsome teal blue corner pieces hold birds with rust wings among small blossoms. A narrow gold main border carries a thin navy vine, held between fine guard lines. The pile is worn low in scattered patches, mostly on the cream vases and in the corner pieces. It brings warmth to a dark room, with gold and rust catching the light against the navy and teal keeping the field from going flat. At 7'4" by 10'3", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashmar rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. Kashmar lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, and its workshops worked large. Pictorial and garden designs were a Kashmar taste, and this rug is a clear case: vases, bowls and birds crowd the field around a central medallion. The border is narrower than the generous borders Kashmar is known for, so the field does most of the talking. Where Kashmar reds run deep, this one swaps a red ground for navy, gold and teal.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
