This navy rug has a delightful allover garden of cream vines, curling leaves and flower heads. Navy fills the field, with an allover garden of cream vines, curling leaves and flower heads in teal blue and tan. A splendid starburst medallion of teal blue petals opens around a tan scalloped ring and a burgundy, cream and navy rosette core. A quarter of the same starburst fills each corner, and small striped urns mark the center line. A tan guard of tiny rosettes sits inside the teal blue main border of small leaves and flower heads. A short pile lets the navy stay dark and rich. The deep blue center works under a pale sofa, where teal petals and a tan ring add warmth. At 7'9" by 11'1", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashmar rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Kashmar lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, and its workshops worked large. Wide fields, generous borders and a taste for pictorial and garden designs set it apart from the medallion tradition further west. In this piece the garden side wins. A starburst medallion anchors the middle, but the field around it is an open spread of vines with a few striped urns on the long axis. Kashmar reds run deep, but this rug keeps them to small burgundy accents while navy and teal carry it.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
