About this rug

Tan and salmon palmettes make a charming lattice on the navy hexagon at the center. Navy fills a large stepped hexagon at the center, covered in a close lattice of tan and salmon palmettes, small diamonds and teal leaves. Tan ground surrounds it, with dainty sprays of salmon, blue and olive blossoms in the four corners. The main border is tan, carrying a scroll of salmon and blue blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in blue edge it on either side. The pile is low in places, and pale specks show where the weave comes through. Two near-black patches break the navy, one at the lower point and one in a band across the middle. On wood floors, the tan border warms the deep blue center. At 6'9" by 9'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Malayer rugs

The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a carpet of 1850 to 1875 in the Mahi design that it catalogs as possibly Hamedan or Malayer. Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Malayer sits between Hamedan and Arak in western Persia, which is exactly where its weaving sits too. It joins the village tradition of Hamedan with the floral drawing of the Arak district. This rug shows that mix in the stepped outline of the center and the floral lattice inside it, set in navy with tan and salmon.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
