A remarkable red diamond medallion with a gray-blue core sits on the navy field. Navy, leaning toward violet, carries the field, with charming scrolling vines that bear red palmettes, cream and salmon blossoms and small blue leaves. A red diamond medallion sits at the center with a gray-blue core, and small pendants point toward the top and bottom. Gorgeous cream spandrels fill the four corners, each worked in large curling vines. The main border is red, carrying navy vines with small cream and blue palmettes. Narrow guard stripes in cream with tiny red and blue marks flank the red band on both sides. No bare patches show in the pile over the field or the borders. The cream corners lighten the heavy navy ground. At 7'1" by 11'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. This rug sets a red medallion on a navy ground inside a red border. The red and navy are strong, and the cream corners add light.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
