About this rug

Large rose flower heads circle a lovely gold starburst medallion with a blue core. Across a navy field, dainty scrolling vines in tan and rose run from end to end. A gold starburst medallion with a blue core sits at the center, circled by large rose flower heads. Handsome steel blue corner pieces carry a cream lattice of small flowers, with a scalloped edge against the field. The main border is deep blue with pale palmettes, set between tan bands of tiny flowers and a fine checked guard. Wear runs across much of the field, thinnest toward the top, where the foundation shows through in small patches. Deep navy and warm tan sit evenly across the low pile. At 7'1" by 10'4", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kashmar rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Kashmar weaving belongs to eastern Persia, where workshops worked large, with wide fields and generous borders. This rug keeps both, with a wide field framed by a deep blue border and tan bands on either side. Where Kashmar often favors pictorial and garden designs, this one is a pure scrolling vine with a starburst at the center. The reds stay in small notes here, more muted than the deep reds often found in Kashmar.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
