About this rug

The star medallion at the center of this rug is remarkable. Set within a blue field, graceful curling arabesques and flower heads spread in gold, tan and cream around a central star medallion. A burgundy and navy heart sits inside the star, surrounded by smaller square cartouches with dark centers. Tan and cream spandrels sit at the four corners, holding floral motifs that echo the center. Navy and burgundy palmettes follow a blue scrolling vine across the wide cream border. Narrow guard stripes in tan and blue flank this band on both sides. The pile is even, and the blue shifts lighter in a few soft patches. It suits a bright room, with soft blue and cream notes underfoot. At 8'4" by 12'3", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, with ivory grounds, soft blue and closely worked vines. This one sets a soft blue field inside a cream border, so the pale side of the palette shows in the frame rather than the ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
