A lovely red diamond medallion with a cream core holds the center. Charming scattered sprays of red, pink and cream blossoms fill the open dark blue field. A red diamond medallion with a cream core sits at the center, with small pendants pointing to the head and foot. Handsome tan spandrels edged in pink sit at each corner, carrying fine floral vines. The wide main border is red, with pink, cream and blue flower heads strung along a scrolling vine. Cream and dark red guard stripes frame this band on either side. White specks scattered over the blue field mark thin spots in the pile. It grounds a large room, the cool blue field balancing the warm red border. At 8'2" by 11'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece is an area rug rather than a runner, with a medallion and flower sprays spread across a blue field. The dark blue ground sits against the red border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
