1844 · 9'8" x 13'2" Persian Kashan Oversized Rug

The slate blue tracery on this Kashan is lovely. Washing has lifted this Kashan to a pale ivory ground. Graceful scrolling arabesques and blossoms traced in slate blue, with small sparks of amber and camel, run across the surface in a fine web. There is no medallion; a tiny rosette marks the exact center and the tracery continues evenly in every direction. The gray brown borders keep the same delicate vocabulary, with rosettes and vines so pale they almost dissolve into the field. The whole surface has the refinement of an old engraving. Light rugs with this much drawing are not common, and this one gives a room brightness and depth at once. The blue tracery sits especially well against navy or steel blue upholstery. At 9'8" by 13'2", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
