About this rug

A charming lozenge medallion rests on this steel blue field. A steel blue field with a teal cast, clouded and faded by age, carries a central lozenge medallion in muted madder red around an ivory core. Small red pendants sit above and below it. Tiny flowers, shrubs and vase forms in olive, ivory and rose are scattered across the blue. Ivory corner pieces are worked with graceful flowering branches. The main border repeats the madder red, with beautiful ivory cartouches and little vases, held between navy guard bands set with diamonds and a blue and tan rope stripe. The pile is worn low across much of the field, especially on the left, and the blue has faded in soft clouds. The soft blue and red suit bedrooms and sitting rooms with pale oak floors and plaster or linen tones. At 10' by 12'6", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

UNESCO lists the historic bazaar of Tabriz as World Heritage and calls it one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Tabriz in northwestern Persia has a city workshop tradition, and the discipline of the drawing shows it. This rug has the classic frame: a medallion properly centered, matching pendants above and below, and borders that resolve neatly at the corners. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so a blue field with ivory corners sits comfortably alongside the reds the city is known for. Rather than filling the field with large vine scrolls, this rug scatters small motifs loosely across it. The age has softened the blue into clouds.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
