The staggered rows of guls on the teal field are charming. Rows of guls and small cross motifs fill the teal field in staggered lines. Each gul has a brown and cream core with black and deep red lines and a red outline, and the crosses between them are worked in faded red. There is no medallion; the same figures repeat from edge to edge. The wide border is clay brown, carrying a chain of stepped diamonds in near-black and cream. Narrow lattice stripes in brown and black step in from the border to the field on every side. The pile runs low in the middle of the field, with white specks and a few pale streaks; the border pile is full. It brings a cool, deep weight to a room, the clay border warming the teal. At 9'2" by 11'1", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that grid, the same gul and cross repeated end to end with no medallion. The color is a deep teal ground with brick, brown and cream guls, and the faded red crosses read as accents.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
