A charming blue star on ivory sits inside the brown surround. Dainty curling vines and small blossoms in brown and blue cover the tan field. A central diamond holds a blue star on ivory inside a brown surround, with smaller lozenges above and below. The four corners hold beautiful spandrels of cream and blue, set against brown. Dark brown carries the main border, with tan and blue palmettes and rosettes on scrolling vines. A blue vine stripe and narrow tan stripes line its inner edge. The pile is low in a few patches across the field and full in the borders. It suits a large room, the blue notes lifting the earth tones. At 8'11" by 12'7", it fits a dining table for six with the chairs pulled out, or a full living room seating group.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
In the 1600s, when Poland and Persia had close relations, the Polish nobility ordered many gold-threaded rugs from Kashan. When rugs of that kind were first shown at the Paris exposition of 1878, they were taken for Polish work. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug, with a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. These rugs were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. It follows that plan, with a central diamond, corner pieces and a scrolling field. Brown carries the border and the medallion surround, with blue as the second color.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
