About this rug

Gold corner pieces and a rust medallion sit on the gray brown field in this lovely rug. Across a gray brown field, fine vine scrolls and small flowers in rust and olive circle a splendid lobed rust medallion with a pale gold rosette core. Large gold corner pieces carry feathery palmettes and rust flowers on scrolling vines. The gold main border carries graceful rust rosettes between gray green crescent leaves. A rust guard stripe with olive zigzags sits on each side of it. A full antique wash left no color at strength, and the pile is worn low across the field, thinnest in the upper half where the weave shows through. In a living room, the rust medallion and gold corners hold against the gray brown, giving a warm, softened center. At 7'1" by 10'7", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the design. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn their corners and close, and the vine scrolls were laid out by someone who could see the whole cartoon before starting. This rug follows that plan: a lobed medallion on the center line, corner pieces answering it. Its workshops used a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds appear alongside the reds. This one sits with the gray beige grounds, in gray brown with rust and gold.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
