About this rug

A star of dark brown strapwork gives this charming rug its medallion. Set in a gray brown field, lovely scrolling vines, palmettes and small blossoms spread from the center. The handsome medallion is a star of dark brown strapwork with a closely worked core. Large curled vine loops fill the corners of the field. A wide sand border carries a continuous scroll of vines and palmettes in brown. Narrow guard stripes of small leaves frame it, with a thin pale blue rope line inside. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the field and the drawing to one warm level. The pile is worn low across the field, where the foundation shows through, and it holds better in the border. Pale blue notes keep the brown lively, and the whole surface holds a warm tone. At 6'5" by 9'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Near Isfahan, Nain sits on the edge of the central desert. Unlike most Persian weaving towns, Nain built its reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier. Its palette is unusually pale for Persia: ivory grounds with soft blue, and closely worked vines. This rug keeps that pale palette, with soft blue showing in small patches among brown vines worked closely across the field. Its field is gray brown rather than the ivory ground named above.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
