About this rug

This charming rug has a terracotta main border set with cream cartouches. Small rosettes and curved vines repeat in pale blue, sage and brown across a gray beige field. A large diamond medallion with a stepped outline sits at the center, filled with the same small motifs. Beautiful dark green corner pieces carry denser clusters of these shapes. The main border is terracotta, set with cream cartouches and curling leaves around small teal centers. Thin guard stripes of cream and pale blue frame the field. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the colors to one soft level. Pile is low through the field. The terracotta border warms the pale ground. At 6'5" by 9'8", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. Tabriz workshops also worked in a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds turn up alongside the reds. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the clean corner turns, with the border meeting itself squarely. A gray beige ground and a soft terracotta border show the wider palette, with red held to a single warm band.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
