About this rug

A lobed medallion in blue and violet sits at the heart of this lovely rug. Dusty rose covers the entire field, with pale patches showing across the center. A lobed medallion sits at the heart, worked in blue and violet around a cream star, with small pendants above and below. Cream scroll spandrels edged in blue fill the four corners. The handsome main border runs blue, carrying pink and cream blossoms with green leaves. Cream and teal stripes run along both edges of the border. Pile runs low in spots, and the foundation shows where the rose reads palest. It anchors a sitting area, the rose field and blue border giving the room a warm center. At 6'8" by 10', it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This rug shows that meeting, with a lobed medallion at its heart and floral blossoms running around the border. Rose fills the field, and the blue border frames it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
