About this rug

A cream medallion on a dusty rose field makes this a charming rug. On a dusty rose field, a cream medallion with violet blue and green details sits at the center, with a small pendant above and below. Cream corner pieces with stepped edges hold pretty sprays of violet blue and pink blossoms. The main border is violet blue, carrying lovely pink and cream rosettes with touches of teal. Gray beige guard stripes, set with a row of small near-black squares, edge the border on both sides. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through in pale patches. It suits a room that needs an anchor, with the rose and cream balancing the violet blue border. At 6'10" by 10'6", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This rug shows a stepped central medallion on a rose field. Its corner pieces carry sprays of violet blue blossoms, and the border repeats pink and cream rosettes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
