About this rug

This charming rug holds a central blue medallion with pendants on a dusty rose field. On a dusty rose field, a central blue medallion with pendants sits within a cream frame of lovely scrolling vines. A small cream center anchors the medallion, which extends in slate blue layers toward both ends. Cream spandrels occupy the four corners with delicate floral sprays and green leaves. The main border runs blue, carrying a repeat of cream rosettes and pink blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in teal line the border edges. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. Cool blue notes balance the warm pink ground. At 5'10" by 9'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. In 1544 he sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern the city, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This rug keeps that mix, with a bold central shape set against scrolling corner vines. The dusty rose field reads soft and open, framed by the strong blue of the border.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
