About this rug

Violet and blue blossoms on a dusty rose field make this a lovely rug. The field is dusty rose, with pretty violet and blue blossoms gathered at the center and the corners. A beautiful round floral medallion in violet and blue sits in the middle, its core cream and pale green, ringed with small blue blossoms and green leaves. Clusters of violet blossoms and green leaves fill the four corners and curve inward. The main border is violet, patterned with blue blossoms and green vines. Narrow cream guard stripes with a small zigzag edge the border on either side. Worn patches in the field let the foundation show. The dense drawing holds the dusty rose and violet together in an easy balance. At 6'5" by 10'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The future Suleiman the Magnificent governed Manisa as a young prince for about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520. By April 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers had set up agencies in the carpet towns of western Anatolia, among them Manisa, Gordes, Demirci and Kula. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. One is the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work, the other the softer floral borders of the western workshops. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug shows the floral side, with a vine border around a round floral medallion. Its dusty rose ground carries the violet and blue blossoms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
