An elongated red diamond medallion with stepped edges stands on this wonderful rug. Across a blue field, small geometric motifs in rust, orange and cream scatter around the center. The medallion is an elongated red diamond with stepped edges, holding stylized forms in its core and sending handsome pendants toward the top and bottom. Red corners are covered in a gorgeous navy lattice. The main border runs deep red, carrying a repeat of geometric shapes in camel and navy. Narrow guard stripes with sawtooth lines in green and cream frame the border on both sides. The pile is full over the face and borders. In a small space, the bright rust notes lift the blue ground. At 3'10" by 6'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This piece keeps the geometric drawing and sets deep red against the blue field. The scattered motifs in the field and the lattice in the corners follow the village manner.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
