About this rug

This lovely rug has a stepped hexagonal medallion on a smoke gray field. On a smoke gray field, a large stepped hexagonal medallion holds geometric forms in gray brown. A handsome gray brown main border frames the design with a simple geometric repeat of small motifs, edged by narrow guard stripes. Under a full antique wash, no color holds its original strength. Pile has gone low over much of the face, and the foundation shows in scattered patches. Dense drawing keeps the muted gray tones restrained underfoot. At 3'4" by 5'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are long and narrow. This rug sets a stepped medallion at the center of the smoke gray field. The heavy wash softens the contrast into a single tone, and the muted palette lets the geometric structure stay visible without demanding attention.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
