About this rug

A deep red stepped medallion sits at the center of this amazing rug. A large stepped diamond medallion in deep red sits at the center, scattered with small geometric figures of animals and people. A red core with a small white square sits inside it. The ground around the medallion is violet, and the same scattered figures fill the four corners. A wide main border in deep red carries rows of lovely star rosettes in cream, rust and black. Thin guard stripes with small geometric repeats flank this band. The pile is full across the face. Deep red and violet shapes frame the reading corner. At 4'3" by 6'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the strong color contrast of local work. The stepped outline of the central diamond and the small animal figures show the village style clearly. The deep red border encloses the violet field with a bold line of star shapes.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
