A large hexagonal medallion holds a cream core and stepped forms on this charming rug. Worked on a burgundy field, small motifs in clay and cream scatter around a large slate blue hexagonal medallion at the center. The medallion holds a cream core and smaller stepped forms. Slate blue pieces fill the corners with matching figures. The pile is low in places, with bare weave in spots. Small motifs repeat along the medallion, and the splendid corner spandrels echo its stepped edge. A narrow border frames the field, and a stripe runs along its edge. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. It sets the deep red against cool blue on wood floors. At 4'5" by 7'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs, not showpieces. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the bold contrast of burgundy against blue. The central medallion and corner pieces share the same stepped logic.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
