A column of hexagonal gul motifs fills the near-black central panel of this lovely rug. A near-black central panel holds a column of splendid hexagonal gul motifs in red and cream. Small diamond figures fill the spaces between these larger emblems. The wide side panels repeat the same geometric vocabulary on a burgundy base. A handsome main border of connected lozenges in red and cream runs around the perimeter, edged by guard stripes of cream zigzags on near-black. Through the center the pile wears thin, and the foundation shows there as a pale band. The near-black geometry fills the corner. At 4'1" by 7'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This piece holds that blend of red with near-black within a modest size. The hexagonal guls march along the axis rather than clustering at one focal point.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
