The stepped medallion of this remarkable rug holds a cream core ringed in tan. Over a deep red field, a large stepped medallion in navy and blue holds a cream core ringed in tan. Handsome matching geometric quarter-pieces fill the four corner spandrels, each a smaller medallion shape, echoing the central shape with small cream hooks. The main border is dark burgundy, carrying a narrow key pattern, with a thin near-black stripe along the outer edge. Full pile across the face keeps the lines crisp. Bold geometric shapes in deep red and navy fill this small rug. At 2' by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This accent piece sets strong contrast against a stepped outline. The deep red ground holds the navy shapes hard against one another, framed by the dark burgundy border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
