Three octagonal medallions run down the near-black field of this charming runner. Three octagonal medallions run down the near-black field, each holding a stepped cross in orange and rust. Small bird figures and a few rosettes fill the near-black ground between them. A splendid muted pink border of small blossoms sits inside an outer red band of small motifs. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows. It suits a narrow passage, letting the bright orange centers stand out against the near-black ground. At 3'1" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This rug keeps that long format, with its three medallions set in a single column. Orange and rust stand out sharply against the near-black ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
