About this rug

This wonderful rug has a star medallion with a tight rosette core. Pretty curling vines and palmettes fill the cream field, scattered with small blossoms in slate blue and rust. A star medallion sits at the center, its core a tight rosette of steel blue and ivory petals. Splendid blue spandrels anchor the four corners, holding large leaf forms against the pale ground. The main border is gray beige, carrying a scroll of cartouches and flower heads in blue and brown. Narrow guard stripes of rust and blue frame the edge on either side. The pile is full across the face, keeping the fine drawing sharp. The soft blue and cream keep the space light. At 3'11" by 6'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, with ivory grounds, soft blue and closely worked vines. This rug keeps that pale palette, with slate blue and cream set against one another in a fine vine lattice. The star medallion is dense and precise, a formal center for the scrolling field around it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
