About this rug

A large deep red stepped medallion sits in open cream space on this wonderful rug. The cream field holds a large stepped medallion in deep red, outlined in orange with small pink and teal accents inside. Handsome notched pendants extend from the top and bottom of this central form, reaching toward the edges. Small navy geometric motifs float in the open space around the medallion. A splendid main border on a cream ground carries rows of diamond shapes in red, charcoal and teal. Narrow guard stripes in wine red and near-black edge this band on both sides. Full pile covers the entire face. It holds a bright note in a small space, where the red center stands out against the pale ground. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, but it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that geometric discipline in its border while gathering the pattern into a single large medallion. The deep red and orange stand out against the cream ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
