Stepped deep red figures run in a column down the tan panel of this remarkable rug. A single column of stepped deep red figures runs down the center of a tan panel, mirrored on either side of a thin central line. A wide border carries a chain of small guls in burgundy, ochre and gray on tan. Narrow stripes of small diamonds in brown and gray edge the main band. The pile reads full in the center and the borders alike. The deep red shapes stand out clearly against the tan field. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one figure repeated with almost no variation. With the drawing held so steady, the color does the talking. This rug keeps that discipline in its center, with the same stepped shape stacked down the panel. The border repeats the motif at smaller scale in burgundy, ochre and gray.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
