The red diamond medallion of this wonderful rug has stepped orange edges. On a cream field, a large red diamond medallion with stepped orange edges holds small pink and teal motifs at its core. Splendid red pendants extend from the top and bottom of this central form, reaching toward the ends. Rows of small navy and teal geometric figures fill the open ground on either side. The main border is deep red, set with a chain of small diamonds in cream and teal. Thin near-black lines mark the boundary around this outer band. The pile is full from end to end. It suits a small floor space, letting the bright red center stand out against the pale ground. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Weavers of the Torkaman tribes in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This piece retains that geometric nature in its angular central shape and the small figures filling the ground. Its short rectangular format gathers the design into a compact area of warm tone.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
