About this rug

Stepped geometric motifs in deep red and ochre form a central column on this remarkable rug. The cream field holds a central column of stepped geometric motifs in deep red and ochre. Small teal leaves on thin stems flank this vertical axis across the open ground. The beautiful main border carries rows of small geometric figures in rust, gold and slate blue on a pale ground. An outer band of near-black holds angular motifs picked out in rust and gold. Thin near-black guard stripes frame the field on both sides. The pile is full throughout. Warm reds and gold stand clear against the pale ground, fitting well into a bright corner. At 2' by 2'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

Turkmen tradition holds the Salor to be an ancient tribe of high status. The Metropolitan Museum of Art calls its Salor main carpet rare and of unusual beauty, and sees such carpets as the models from which other Turkmen tribes derived their own. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This piece keeps that strict repetition in its central column of geometric forms. The cream ground sets off the rust and ochre accents and keeps the warm palette steady against the pale field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
