About this rug

Rows of small cream boteh repeat inside a large hexagon on this remarkable rug. Over a navy field, rows of small cream boteh repeat inside a large central hexagon. A beautiful dusty rose lattice band frames this navy core, with a small ornament at the top and bottom points. Cream corners fill the four ends, each packed with pretty olive green boteh. The main border runs dark blue with small red and white blossoms. The pile is full across the face, keeping the geometric drawing sharp and clear. It anchors a small space, and the deep blue center grounds the lighter rose and cream notes around it. At 2'6" by 4'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Kermanshah, the city that gives Songhor’s province its name, was founded in the 4th century by the Sasanian king Bahram IV. Around the year 1000 the Kermanshah region was ruled by a Kurdish dynasty, the Hasanwayhids. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong reds and deep blues. This piece keeps that geometry, with a strict hexagonal medallion and stepped outlines set against the navy ground. The dusty rose lattice and olive corner motifs add a softer warmth to the blue ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
