About this rug

A central red star medallion sits on the indigo field of this lovely rug. Over an indigo field, dainty scrolling vines carry small pink blossoms and green leaves around a splendid central red star medallion. The medallion holds a cream core with small rosettes, and red pendants extend from the top and bottom points. Large cream and salmon spandrels fill the top corners with curved leaf forms. A narrow near-black border frames the design. A few patches show white specks where the pile has worn thin. It grounds a small area, and the bright red center stands out against the indigo ground. At 2'5" by 3'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. Its weavers tie their knots with a small hooked knife instead of their fingers, and have been timed at faster than one knot a second. Tabriz in northwestern Persia is a city workshop tradition, and it shows in the discipline of the drawing. Medallions are properly centered, borders turn cleanly at the corners, and the vine scrolls follow a plan worked out in full before weaving began. This rug keeps that centered medallion and the planned vine scroll, with the drawing balanced on both sides of the red star. The pink blossoms scatter across the indigo ground without breaking the symmetry.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
