A red diamond medallion holds a layered rosette in this wonderful rug. Curled vines and cream blossoms fill the near-black field, scattered around a central red diamond medallion. The medallion holds a lovely layered rosette in cream and teal, with small pendants reaching into the near-black ground. Cream spandrels curve at the four corners, carrying delicate rust leaves and blue accents. A wide burgundy border frames the design, filled with cream flower heads and scrolling green stems. Narrow guard stripes of brown and blue geometric patterns edge the main border on both sides. Full pile covers the entire surface, keeping the drawing sharp and the colors distinct. It grounds the near-black center against the warm red frame in a small space. At 2'4" by 3'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs are known for a wide field and open spacing between the motifs. This piece keeps that open layout, with the floral drawing spread loosely across the ground instead of packed tight. The near-black field holds the cream and rust motifs clearly.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
