Cream and red guls run in a column down this wonderful rug. Four handsome stepped hexagonal guls run in a column down the navy field, worked in cream and red, with triangular shapes pointing in from the sides. The wide tan border is covered in a dense lattice of tiny red and blue figures. Narrow guard stripes in dark blue and cream sit between the border and the field. The pile is full across the whole rug. It holds the deep blue and red together in a small space. At 2'1" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, with almost no variation. Because the drawing stays so fixed, much of the life is in the color. Here the navy ground sets the red and cream drawing in sharp relief.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
