The cream diamond medallion of this delightful rug sits on a navy field. Navy covers the field, where graceful curling vines and small rosettes appear in cream, brick and gray beige. A cream diamond medallion sits at the center, holding a near-black geometric core and flanked by small pendants. Handsome brick spandrels fill the four corners of the field, carrying curling leaves and navy blossoms. The main border is brick, set with cream and near-black flower heads linked by a vine. Thin guard stripes of small cream circles on a near-black ground frame the field. The pile is full through the field and the border. It brings a dense drawing to a small spot, the navy ground making the cream motifs stand out. At 1'11" by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This small accent rug keeps the floral drawing and the navy, red and cream palette found in the district’s longer weavings. The central medallion and corner spandrels organize the dense vine pattern within a compact frame.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
