A cream star medallion holds a small red flower in this remarkable rug. Cream vines, deep red leaves and small brown accents fill the near-black field. A gorgeous cream star medallion sits at the center, holding a small red flower. The main border is deep red with cream palmettes, and a cream band of small rosettes edges it on the inside. The pile is full over the whole face. It anchors the near-black ground against the bright cream drawing in a small space. At 1'10" by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Hamedan is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece keeps the dense vine drawing of the region. Its compact shape gathers the pattern into a single star medallion rather than stretching it down a length.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
