About this rug

Angular geometric forms fill the burgundy field of this remarkable rug. The burgundy field fills with angular geometric forms in cream and black. A central stepped medallion holds a small floral core, extending beautiful notched pendants toward the top and bottom edges. Deeper burgundy corners carry blocky cream and black motifs that mirror the central drawing. The main border runs cream with a graceful red and black geometric vine, edged by thin bands in red and black. The pile is full through the drawing, leaving the crisp lines distinct against the saturated ground. It holds the burgundy and black in a tight balance for a compact spot. At 1'8" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece keeps a bold geometric drawing and a firm placement of red against black. The layout focuses on one stepped figure, packing the limited size with a single strong shape.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
