The medallions of this remarkable rug sit in a vertical row on deep red. On a deep red field, a vertical row of medallions sits amid delicate scrolling vines and flower heads. The central medallion is the largest, holding a dark blue core with ochre points, while smaller ones flank it above and below. Splendid blue corner pieces carry stylized floral sprays against the red ground. A wide border of small black, blue and pink motifs on a cream ground is edged by thin guard stripes in ochre and dark blue. The pile is full from edge to edge. The dense drawing holds the bright red, blue and ochre notes in a tight, graphic balance. At 1'8" by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This accent rug brings that village drawing to a smaller size, with a crowded field of vines and medallions. The deep red ground sets the dark blue and ochre motifs in clear contrast, and the cream border keeps the active pattern within a steady edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
