The central medallion of this remarkable rug holds a teal and pink rosette. Graceful vines and flower heads fill the deep red field, crowded around a central medallion. The medallion holds a teal and pink rosette within a cream frame, with pendants reaching toward the top and bottom. No corner spandrels break the red ground, which carries blue blossoms and olive leaves throughout. A splendid near-black main border runs small cream and pink motifs, edged by narrow guard stripes of cream dotted with green and red. The pile is full across the face and in every border. The dense drawing keeps the bright blue and green notes clear against the red ground. At 1'8" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This small accent rug keeps the bold floral drawing and strong color contrast seen in those longer weavings. Its compact size gathers red, blue and green around a single medallion.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
