The cream lobed diamond medallion of this lovely rug holds a geometric core. Over a deep red field, charming scattered floral sprays in navy and cream surround a central form. The medallion is a cream lobed diamond holding a geometric core of burgundy, steel blue and pale green. Spandrels at the four corners are cream, carrying large floral motifs in red and navy. A camel main border runs a pretty vine of small red and blue blossoms around the perimeter. A narrow deep red guard stripe edges the inner field and the outer rim. A few patches have worn low where horizontal bands of white foundation show through the red ground. Bright red and cream drawing stands out against the floor in a small nook. At 1'10" by 2'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This small piece keeps the region’s bold red ground and the clear contrast of a cream medallion against the red field. The scattered floral sprays and the lobed central shape sit clearly within the camel border, holding the floral drawing distinct across the worn face.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
