The central diamond medallion of this lovely rug has a small square core. Geometric motifs and small rosettes cover the deep red field in a dense lattice of dark green and cream. A central diamond medallion holds a small square core in gold, white and navy. The corners of the field are cut at an angle. The main border is cream, carrying a charming vine of small flowers in pink, blue and green. Narrow guard stripes in near-black and red frame the cream band on both sides. The pile is low in places across the field. It anchors a compact area where the red and cream stay near the viewer. At 2'1" by 2'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. This rug keeps the geometric drawing and the strong contrast of red against cream found in that tradition. The dense lattice of green and blue motifs fills the red ground with a busy, village rhythm.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
