About this rug

A floral spray rises from a large boteh base at the center of this remarkable rug. Across a deep red field, a central floral spray rises from a large boteh base, flanked by small blossoms and small woven script. Stepped slate blue spandrels fill the four corners, each holding a single pink flower head. A cream main border carries a delicate vine of red and navy rosettes and leaves, edged with narrow brown and slate blue guard stripes. The pile is full across the whole face and the borders. It anchors the bright red and slate blue against the cream frame. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This small rug sets a floral spray and a few lines of script on a bold red ground, with slate blue corners at each end. The cream border frames the red plainly.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
