A navy floral core sits inside the cream star medallion of this wonderful rug. Scattered floral motifs in blue, green and cream gather around a central shape in the deep red ground. A cream star medallion holds a navy floral core at the center. Handsome blue spandrels with brown details sit at the four corners. The main border uses a cream ground, carrying a graceful vine of red and blue blossoms. Narrow guard stripes edge the border on both sides. The pile is full over the face and along the borders. It suits a tight spot, adding a warm red note cooled by the blue drawing. At 1'8" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses. This piece keeps the strong geometric outline found in the area, with a clear central medallion and corner spandrels. Bright blue and green accents contrast with the warm base, while the pale border holds the pattern in.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
